General instructions for laser patients

 

After a laser treatment, patients should follow these instructions:

  • Wear sun glasses and avoid sunlight the first day

  • Stay in a dark room with a very dim light the first day

  • Avoid driving a car, your sight will be still affected by the eye drops used before treatment.

  • Put the ointment prescribed by your doctor according to these instructions: stretch your lower lid downwards and put the ointment inside your eye, be careful not to let the stick touch your eyes to avoid any scratches.

  • If you have a headache you can have Panadol ( Paracetamol).

  • Stick to your doctors advices, and be consistent in taking the medication prescribed.

  • If you feel any pain, red eyes, or have anything that worries you, do not hesitate to contact your doctor.

  • Stick to your follow up appointment date.

Instructions and preparations on the day of the surgery

  • Be in the hospital at 9 a.m on surgery day

  • You can have a light breakfast before coming and have your medication taken in its specified time, unless advised otherwise.

  • You should have all your papers ready including: identification card, insurance card, acceptance from your insurer, lab results, scan results, medication, medical notesÖ

  • Take a shower before coming to the surgery

  • Wear comfortable clothes, avoid using any makeup or perfume and remove all jewellery.

  • Have one companion with you on the day of surgery, someone who can stay with you in the hospital as well as at home in the first 2 days.

  • Avoid the following in the first 24 hours:
    o Driving
    o Operating on heavy machinery
    o Drinking alcohol
    o Taking any medication not specified by your doctor

  • In case you need any rest after the operation the hospital will provide you with a room to rest in under supervision.

Instructions for Excimer laser patients

  • You might feel some pain in the first 2 days of treatment

  • Itís better to rest in a dark room or under a very dim light. You might consider going to bed early the first day.

  • The doctor will put contact lenses for you and would remove them himself after 3 days. In case any of your lenses fall donít attempt to put them again, call your doctor.

  • After the treatment your eyes will become red and tearful. You would feel as if you have got some sand in your eyes, itís very important not to scratch your eyes by hand or even a handkerchief.

  • While taking a shower be careful to keep the water away from your eyes, you will not be allowed to swim for a while.

  • You need your sunglass every time you need to go out during day time.

  • Your sight will gradually improve starting the 5th day after the treatment.

  • Your sight will not be clear yet at a short distance during the first week.

  • Avoid driving a car until you are sure you can see clearly.

  • One of the most important advices is to stick to the medication routine instructed by your doctor and your commitment to the follow up appointments. The success treatment will highly depend on these instructions.

  • Finally, response to treatment differs from patient to another.

Instructions for patients after an eye surgery

  • Donít sleep on the side of your treated eye

  • Donít lift any heavy material and donít bend after a retina surgery, otherwise ask your doctor.

  • While in the car donít rest your head on the seat head, keep a cushion behind your back and ask your driver to drive slowly.

  • Check on your eyes according to your doctorís advice and use the eye drops as follows:
    o Open your eye slowly
    o Have someone to help you while you are using an eye drop; stretch your lower lid downwards and add drops in the opening you made without touching your upper lid. Same instructions apply for ointments.
    o You can also lie down on your back and use the eye drop on the internal opening of your eye.
    o Wipe the tears in a sterile cloth while keeping your eyes closed.

  • Do not sleep without the plastic lid given at checkout. The micropore tape should be changed morning and evening after each change.

  • You can use the shower, making sure that water and soap donít reach your eye. To wash the hair, the patient is advised to bend backwards and direct the shower on the head only.

  • In the 5th day after surgery, you can remove the plastic lid during the day and wear sunglasses. However the plastic lid should be kept at night until 2 weeks after the surgery.

  • You should stick to the medication instructions offered by the nurse or the doctor.

  • You should stick to some specific instructions to your health and case such as: avoid sugars, salt and alcohol.

  • If you feel any pain, red eyes, or have anything that worries you, do not hesitate to contact your doctor.

  • Stick to your follow up appointment date.

  • You should not exert any sight effort, such as driving a car, otherwise ask your doctor.
